Disney’s ‘Encanto’ Star Adassa Talks “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” Success & Latinos Identifying with La Familia Madrigal

by Natasha Melina

Colombian singer Adassa is no stranger to the music industry, Universal Music Latin took a chance on the artist signing her in the early 2000s where she toured with Daddy Yankee and Ivy Queen as well as worked with Ciara, Missy Elliott, and Pitbull.

She has recently made her acting debut in none other than Disney’s latest blockbuster “Encanto.” The film spreads a message about family, perseverance, and unconditional love.

“Encanto” revolves around The Madrigals “an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift — every child except Mirabel.”

Adassa who voices Dolores Madrigal tells us about how she was scouted by Disney for the role after they saw her singing in one of her Youtube videos “Por Que Ella y No Yo” which at the time had 300 views. They loved the sound she experimented with and had her replicate the music style for her verse in Billboards’s Hot 100 #1 song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

As a Latina woman, Adassa is proud to see that Latinos are continuously being given opportunities to share our stories with the world since it’s something relatively new to the big screen. Lin-Manuel Miranda, a pioneer for Latinos in the film industry constantly vouching for our voices to be heard was present throughout the entire process of creating “Encanto” and played a huge role in all the success it’s having. Everyone from kids to adults are identifying with the cast and characters of “Encanto,” cosplaying as the characters and creating social media trends based off the film.
